Signalling & Train Control Systems
Diagnostics Systems
Reliable infrastructure diagnostics for signalling and telecommunications networks.
Coded Current Automatic Block – BACC
The BACC system, used in Italy on 3kV DC electrified lines, is a simple cab signalling and train protection system. It continuously monitors train speed, computes braking curves, and requires driver acknowledgment for signal changes. The system uses two amplitude-modulated currents (50 Hz and 178 Hz) in the rails, detected by receiver coils on the locomotive. MERMEC’s monitoring system analyzes the magnetic field and signal modulations, detecting anomalies in both current sources and detectors using dedicated sensors.

ETCS & SCMT Eurobalise
The MERMEC diagnostic system checks the Eurobalise’s operating conditions, detecting anomalies in ground plants (e.g., degraded balises), decoding telegrams, and analyzing the radiation pattern. The Eurobalise, powered by the train, transmits telegrams about signals, speed limits, and track conditions. The system processes received telegrams and provides cab signaling through the European Vital Computer (EVC), ensuring safety by monitoring speed and applying brakes when needed. The system also evaluates the status and functionality of the balise and associated components.

SSC Transponder
The MERMEC diagnostic system monitors the SSC wayside subsystem by analyzing telegrams received from transponders and evaluating the Air-Gap Index. The SSC (Driving Support System) ensures safe and efficient train operations by monitoring speed and enforcing braking when necessary. It is widely used on over 5,000 km of Italian rail lines. The system consists of a Wayside Subsystem (SST) that transmits track and signaling information and an Onboard Subsystem (SSB) that checks train compliance, activating emergency braking if needed.

Wireless Networks
The diagnostic system checks RF coverage and acquires functional parameters for commercial wireless technologies (GSM, DCS, GSM-R). It evaluates service quality, including speech quality degradation in telephony and GPRS data transmission performance. The system consists of several components: SYNC Board for synchronization, train antennas, a software module with PESQ for voice quality, a voice response module, digital acquisition board, RF receivers, mobile stations for Layer 3 message acquisition, and an AUPU for data processing.
